8 to 5 Enneagram Podcast: Time Orientation, Information Intake, and Conflict Styles - How We Misunderstand Each Other

We often talk past each other without realizing it, leading to unintended conflicts and misunderstandings. Today we discuss three common ways we fail to communicate without even knowing it.

Welcome back and thanks for listening! This week, Sara and I discuss three different sets of triads, i.e. groupings of three personality types together, related to how different types are oriented to time, take in and react to information, and handle conflict. Each type has a natural, default approach to each of these topics that may seem foreign, if not inappropriate, to other types. Living with the enneagram helps us recognize and appreciate that other people have different ways of processing the world and relationships. When we understand these differences, we are able better to love, understand, and, when necessary, extend grace to them and to ourselves.

As an aid to this episode, here are the triads we discuss:

Orientation to time: Past - 4, 5, 9 Present - 1, 2, 6 Future - 3, 7, 8

Information processing: Thinking/Head - 5, 6, 7 Feeling/Heart - 2, 3, 4 Gut/Instinct - 8, 9, 1

Conflict Styles: Positive - 7, 9, 2 Competency - 1, 3, 5 Reactive - 4, 6, 8
